How laboratories store and handle lyophilized peptides

Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide powder is the usual form for research compounds because it is more stable than a solution. Good storage practice protects that stability.

Keep it cold and dry

Laboratories commonly keep unopened vials in a refrigerator or freezer, in a sealed container, away from humidity. Always follow the storage instructions from the supplier or the compound specification, because requirements differ between compounds.

Protect from light and heat

Light and temperature swings can degrade some compounds. Store vials in their original packaging or a dark container, and avoid leaving them out on a bench or in a vehicle.

Let the vial reach room temperature before opening

Opening a cold vial in a warm room can draw condensation onto the powder. Allowing it to warm up in its sealed container first is standard practice.

Keep records

Note the compound, batch number, date received and storage conditions for each vial. Good records make results easier to trace and repeat.
